Selectorised machine or Hammer Strength - which should you choose for your workout?

Selectorised machines and plate-loaded Hammer Strength machines differ in how you adjust the load and how the movement feels. We suggest which to start with and which to use for building strength.

At RIO TOP GYM you will find both selectorised (pin-loaded) machines and professional plate-loaded Hammer Strength machines. This means you can tailor your workout to your level, your goal and your personal preferences.

So which type of equipment should you choose? Both are effective, but they differ in how the load is adjusted and in the character of the movement.

What is a selectorised machine?

A selectorised machine, also known as a weight stack machine, has a set of weights stacked one on top of another. You select the weight with a pin, placing it at the right value. There is no need to carry or load plates, so changing the weight takes just a few seconds.

It is a convenient option for beginners, seniors, people returning to exercise and anyone who values simple, safe training.

Advantages of selectorised machines

  • quick and easy weight changes,
  • simple to use,
  • a stable, controlled movement path,
  • the option to increase the weight gradually,
  • convenient for circuit training,
  • a good choice for beginners,
  • no need to carry plates around.

Selectorised machines also work brilliantly for supersets and drop sets, because reducing the weight only takes moving the pin.

What is a Hammer Strength machine?

Hammer Strength is a highly regarded brand of professional training equipment. Many of its most recognisable machines use weight plates - just like a barbell. You choose the weight yourself and load the plates onto the machine’s dedicated loading arms.

These machines combine the stability of machine training with a feel close to free weight exercises. On many models the left and right sides work independently, which helps you spot and gradually even out differences in muscle strength.

Advantages of Hammer Strength machines

  • the ability to use heavy loads,
  • solid, stable construction,
  • natural movement biomechanics,
  • independent work of each side of the body on many models,
  • strong engagement of the target muscles,
  • a feel close to free weight training,
  • an excellent choice for intermediate and advanced lifters.

Which machine should you choose?

You do not have to choose once and for all - the two types of machine complement each other well. To start with, you can follow a simple rule:

  • you are a beginner or coming back after a break - choose a selectorised machine, because you can change the weight quickly and keep the movement path more easily,
  • you do drop sets or circuit training - a selectorised machine lets you reduce the weight in a few seconds,
  • you are building strength and muscle mass - go for Hammer Strength, where it is easier to work with heavy loads,
  • you want to even out differences between the sides of your body - choose a Hammer Strength model with independently moving arms.
